Meet Mary Arscott and hear her online dating story:

Why People Use Dating Apps (according to Mary)

She says some people have been inspired by her story and chosen to use the dating app. One such example is her roommate.

After hearing her story, Arscott's roommate chose to try her luck with the app.

"After my first semester dating my boyfriend, she got a Tinder," says Arscott. "And now she's dating a guy for about seven months, too, from Tinder."

According to Arscott, there are other reasons why people may choose to use the app.

"Some people just use it for hook-ups, " says Arscott. "Some people just want to have a cup of coffee with someone and not be lonely. Some people actually will find their boyfriend on Tinder, like me."

She says there's a stigma associated with dating apps because people may think you are "lazy" or not social enough and "need someone to help you find a guy or a girl."

Arscott's Advice

She offers four pieces of advice for people who may be considering trying their luck with dating apps:

1) Be Picky

"You have a right to be picky," says Arscott. "Go be picky. If someone you think looks creepy, don't swipe right."

2) Be Open-minded

"Have an open mind," says Arscott. "I was definitely close-minded. "I just used it to boost my confidence when I felt ugly on a day, having guys tell me I'm pretty."

3) Go On One Date

"Just, seriously, just go on one date on Tinder to see how it is," says Arscott. "You never know. You might meet a boyfriend or something."

4) Tell A Friend

"With you going on an online date, tell a friend, tell someone," says Arscott. "Be safe, but try it. That's why I say 'be picky.'"

Mary Arscott, a sophomore in college, sat with the Swipe It team to discuss her current relationship with her boyfriend Lance. They met through Tinder and have been dating for over a year.

Arscott says she decided to go on one date after her friend encouraged her.

"I thought it would be just one date, and I wouldn't see this guy ever again," says Arscott about her first date with Lance. "But he was really fun on the first date, so we went on another date, and another date. And a year and a month later, we're still together."

When asked whether she shares details about her relationship, she says she tells friends they met on Tinder, but keeps this detail secret when it comes to their parents.

"They're a different generation," says Arscott. "They don't understand online dating. They think it's for desperate people who just need to get married, or something. Whereas, it's just something that happened. It wasn't even intentional."
